Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis or juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. It is not clear why hydroxychloroquine is effective at treating autoimmune diseases. It is not well understood how Plaquenil helps treat autoimmune diseases like lupus and many types of arthritis. It is thought that Plaquenil interferes with how cells in the immune system communicate with each other. Does anyone know if Plaquenil lowers your immune system? My daughter started school in August and since then I have had one illness after another. I don't know if it's the disease itself or the medication. Or maybe it's just normal when your kid starts school.

It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis.

  6. Several small and uncontrolled studies have examined the effects of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine on immune activation. One study of 8 patients taking chloroquine but no concomitant antiretroviral therapy for 8 weeks reported a decrease from 8% to 5.5% in the percentage of memory CD8 cells expressing HLA-DR and CD38.

Any one have any experience or info regarding pre-existing precancerous conditions and the effects of Plaquenil on the immune system. I see so much info on the net where some says that Plaquenil has very mild effect on immune system except for eye issues --- Other info says it is an immunosuppressant. In 2003, a novel mechanism was described wherein hydroxychloroquine inhibits stimulation of the toll-like receptor TLR 9 family receptors. TLRs are cellular receptors for microbial products that induce inflammatory responses through activation of the innate immune system.
