The Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) is the leaflet included in the pack with a medicine. It is written for patients and gives information about taking or using a medicine. It is possible that the leaflet in your medicine pack may differ from this version because it may have been updated since your medicine was packaged. Amoxil is indicated for the treatment of the following infections in adults and children (see sections 4.2, 4.4 and 5.1): • Acute bacterial sinusitis • Acute otitis media • Acute streptococcal tonsillitis and pharyngitis • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis • Community acquired pneumonia • Acute cystitis • Asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnancy • Acute pyelonephritis • Typhoid and paratyphoid fever • Dental abscess with spreading cellulitis • Prosthetic joint infections • Helicobacter pylori eradication • Lyme disease Amoxil is also indicated for the prophylaxis of endocarditis. Consideration should be given to official guidance on the appropriate use of antibacterial agents. The dose of Amoxil that is selected to treat an individual infection should take into account: • The expected pathogens and their likely susceptibility to antibacterial agents (see section 4.4) • The severity and the site of the infection • The age, weight and renal function of the patient; as shown below The duration of therapy should be determined by the type of infection and the response of the patient, and should generally be as short as possible. Some infections require longer periods of treatment (see section 4.4 regarding prolonged therapy). Children may be treated with Amoxil capsules, dispersible tablets suspensions or sachets. Amoxil Paediatric Suspension is recommended for children under six months of age. Therapy can be started parenterally according to the dosing recommendations of the intravenous formulation and continued with an oral preparation. Hypersensitivity to the active substance, to any of the penicillins or to any of the excipients listed in section 6.1. Before initiating therapy with amoxicillin, careful enquiry should be made concerning previous hypersensitivity reactions to penicillins, cephalosporins or other beta-lactam agents (see sections 4.3 and 4.8). Children weighing 40 kg or more should be prescribed the adult dosage. History of a severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction (e.g. Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions (including anaphylactoid and severe cutaneous adverse reactions) have been reported in patients on penicillin therapy.

AMOXIL contains a penicillin called amoxicillin (as trihydrate) as the active ingredient. Your doctor has weighed the expected benefits of you taking AMOXIL against the risks this medicine could have for you. AMOXIL belongs to a group of medicines called penicillins AMOXIL is used to treat a range of infections caused by bacteria. These may be infections of the chest (pneumonia), tonsils (tonsillitis), sinuses (sinusitis), urinary and genital tract, skin and fleshy tissues. AMOXIL works by killing the bacteria that cause these infections. Your doctor may have prescribed AMOXIL for another reason. Some medicines may affect the way other medicines work. Amoxicillin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. Amoxicillin is also used with other medications to treat stomach/intestinal ulcers caused by the bacteria H. Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually every 8 or 12 hours. Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
